americans held by islamic militants. u.s. government officials tell cnn that may not necessarily, though, be the case. let's get straight to our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence working this story for us. chris, be what is the very latest that you're hearing? >> wolf, the latest that we're getting from u.s. officials is that some americans may have escaped but some may still be held by those hostage takers and they are still seeing signs perhaps of some intermittent fighting, suggesting that perhaps this isn't over yet. as the hostage situation stretched to a second day, u.s. officials scrambled to find a resolution and determine the state of the americans still in militant hands. >> this incident will be resolved, we hope with a minimum loss of life. but when you deal with these relentless terrorists, life is not in any way precious to them. >> americans and other western workers were on as about when multiple militants attacked. the militants took hostage at this gas plant heavily armed with rocket grenades and forced some hostages to wear explosive vests. the militants may have t

on homosexuality that he preached in the 1990s. cnn's belief blog is on the phone with me now and eric, this is all over something he said what, 20 years ago? >> at least. mid 90s is when he preached this sermon. it's important to point out that a lot of people were upset when this sermon first circulated earlier in the week and pointed out he thought homosexuality was a sin and something that keeps people from god and comes short of the mark of god's best plan for people's life were some of the words from that sermon and he thought people could change their behaviors and attitudes about homosexuality through coming to jesus. that's a fairly common or a boiler plate mainstream evangelical in the 1990s when he delivered that. since then we have seen a number of shifts on their position and go more towards the position that said orientation is not something you choose. however, we have drew his acceptance of the president's invitation of the benediction. he for the last decade or so has been one of the biggest voices on endying global slavery at least in the christian community and didn't want it to

're in the cnn newsroom, i'm drew griffin in for don lemon tonight. this will be a pivotal week in the political battle between those who want stricter gun control laws and those fighting to protect the right to own guns in the united states. on tuesday, the vice president and his task force will send gun violence recommendations to the oval office. both sides bracing for a fight. we have more on this story in a moment. but first, police in san diego were forced to shoot a man with a gun who ran inside a movie theater. the officers reen spoding to a domestic disturbance call yesterday when they chased the armed suspect into a crowded theater. moviegoers poured out. officers shot the suspect who survived, but is in critical condition tonight. >>> american troops help france in an attempt to rescue a french intelligence agent. president obama today detailed the u.s. involvement in the mission, which was friday night. he said, u.s. troops led to what he called limited technical support and made american aircraft available if needed. the mission failed. the captured agent was not rescued and the fre
